Pet Matters by Pat Deshong, President

Furry Friends Adoption, Clinic & Ranch

February 2019

"For The Love Of Animals" features real stories happening at Furry Friends in Jupiter. We are The Humane Society of Greater Jupiter/Tequesta and the only no-kill shelter open to the public in northern Palm Beach County.  We’ve been rescuing, rehabilitating, and re-homing the homeless animals in our community for more than 30 years. Our not for profit 501c3 organization consists of our Jupiter based adoption center, veterinary clinic (open to the public), thrift store, and Palm City ranch.

Three kittens and their 3-legged mother.

A Rubbermaid container with the lid on.

Looming night temperatures in the 50s.

Desperate cries for help.

This is what Jupiter Farms’ resident, Jennifer W. encountered on an evening walk with her dog on Tuesday, January 15th.  Expecting a relaxing walk after a long day, she was not prepared for a chorus of pleading meows that met her.  She searched for the source. Where were the cries coming from?

Horrified, she soon discovered a Rubbermaid container with the lid on, sitting in an area away from the road.  When she opened the lid, the overwhelming stench of feces & urine, along with three kittens and their mama, greeted her. In those seconds, three things happened; they had fresh air to breathe, they knew they were saved, and this kind woman was their hero.

What character of mind conjures such an act of horror?  What heart beats to this drum of cruelty? What hands are capable of committing abandonment like this?  We can only speculate as to the type of person who would treat living creatures in this manner. We live in a changing world but at Furry Friends, we remain steadfast with hope that there are many more heroes than abusers out there.  This will always be our hope.

Thank you to the merciful rescuer, who came along at just the right time and took action.  Thank you to our cat foster champion, Robyn Blair, for immediately welcoming them into her home, ridding them of their filth and fleas, and keeping them safe.

Our Furry Friends’ veterinarians have medically evaluated the family and deemed them available for adoption.  They now need their “forever home” hero. Please consider being the one who truly completes their happy beginning.  I know we can all agree that they, like every one of our Furry Friends, are incredibly deserving.

This is Little Face. Little Pretty Face, right? She's classy, sassy, and ~8 years old. She came to us from the Keys during Hurricane Irma.  Little Face loves people but really couldn't care less about other cats. She'd love a home where she can get all the attention. Little Face is available at our Palm City Ranch.

Chase & Benji are a bonded pair looking for their forever home together.  These 4 year-old beagles are as sweet as they are cute. Chase is shy and depends on the comfort and security of Benji.  Benji is very confident. Please come meet them at Furry Friends in Jupiter!

This is what Furry Friends is all about…rescuing, rehabilitating, and giving homeless companion animals their best future… no matter how long it takes to find it.  We have many wonderful dogs and cats in our shelter and invite you to come visit us six days a week. Our hours are Monday through Saturday, 11am to 6pm.

Furry Friends depends on the generous support from donors like you.  Without Furry Friends, the future of the many animals we save would be uncertain.  Thank you for donating and helping us continue our animal saving mission.
